Diabetes can cause serious eye problems such as vision loss and blindness – in fact, diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults. In the eye, diabetes can manifest itself as:
- Diabetic Retinopathy: Damage to the blood vessels in the retina.
- Cataract: Clouding of the lens of the eye.
- Glaucoma: Optic nerve damage, generally due to high eye pressure, that leads to vision loss.
Early diagnosis and treatment are important because diabetes related eye conditions generally have no apparent symptoms until significant damage has already occurred.
If you have diabetes, we recommended that you have a Dilated Exam at least once every year.
