Dilated Exam

Dilation is a special test which consists of using drops to dilate the pupils. The doctor can then obtain a much better view of all the structures of the eye behind the pupil.

The dilated exam is a valuable tool for assessing the health of the retina and aids in the detection of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and other conditions affecting the eye. Many of these conditions do not have any symptoms and can cause a loss of vision if not detected.

Important: The short-term side effects of the dilating drops include sensitivity to light, blurred vision at near, and possible blur at distance. Driving is usually not impaired, however, you should schedule dilation for another day if you may feel uncomfortable operating a vehicle under these conditions. The effects of the drops usually last 4-6 hours.
